I like your comment about your increase in capacity to love when you have children. I feel an overwhelming joy sweep over me every time my son smiles at me, spontaneously hugs me or makes a silly joke. It is a unique sensation.
I was Born and raised in Sitka, Alaska.
Growing up, I played jazz drums and percussion, composed some, and tried to stay out of the rain!
I studied at Interlochen one summer (1987) then went on to Oberlin the next year where I studied percussion and spent a goodly amount of time with composers and guru Randolph Coleman. Over the next few years, I studied in London, Philadelphia, Aspen, Norfolk (Yale Contemporary Music Seminar), and Rice. In 1996, I was appointed Assistant Curator of Music at the Cleveland Museum of Art, bought a house, and got married to Kirsten Docter--a great violist and THE greatest sandwich maker. Probably the highlight of my career at this time was producing the Aki Festival of New Music. This was overshadowed, however, in 2000, when our son Sebastian was born; Benjamin followed in 2003. Their entry into our life overwhelmingly expanded our capacity for love. In 2005, after being promoted to Associate Director of Music, the museum closed for renovation. I decided to return to graduate school at Case Western Reserve University to study musicology, where I am today. Kirsten continues to teach at CIM and Case and perform with the Cavani Quartet.
